The Hudson Valley Dance Theatre was founded in 1986, and now provides a vehicle for the dance, choreographic and related skills acquired by local children and/or adults. The H.V.D.T. offers the organizational framework that can support and nurture a sense of community and cooperation that can be gained by performers and audience alike, through dance theatre productions. “The Nutcracker Short & Sweet” is one such successful production. The H.V.D.T. has been building a repertoire that includes ballet, character, folk, tap, Broadway style jazz, Hip-Hop and dance drama. The H.V.D.T. is a not-for-profit corporation approved by the NYS Department of Education and is supported solely b y donations.
The school most closely affiliated with H.V.D.T. is the Dance Design School. However, dancers from any school or area are encouraged to join the Dance Company. Senior Company members are required to take a minimum of five ballet classes a week, Junior Company members must be taking at least two ballet classes a week. Members of New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and Georgia Ballet have performed as soloists for the company. H.V.D.T. company members have worked with Tony winning choreographers such as Wayne Cilento and have performed in various towns throughout the Hudson Valley, including Mohonk Mountain House and Westchester Broadway Theatre.
